Google Updates Borders Accuracy in Google Earth & Google Maps

Google has announced improvements to borders accuray in Google Maps and -will be coming very soon to- Google Earth for 60 countries and disputed borders are indicated as such. With these improvements, many borders will now more closely follow natural boundaries such as mountains and rivers.

GeoEye Releases High-resolution Satellite Imagery of 2010 FIFA World Cup Venues

GeoEye, Inc.  has released high resolution satellite imagery all 2010 FIFA World Cup venues located in South Africa. This year’s international tournament is scheduled to take place June 11 – July 11 and marks the 19th anniversary of the games and Africa’s first World Cup event. Satellite Imagery of Iceland Volcanic Ash

A towering cloud of volcanic ash from the erupting Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland has spread across much of northern Europe. Not only is it causing substantial flooding in Iceland due to the melting glacier, but it’s causing the cancellation of the thousands of flights across Europe. Air traffic officials said that they cannot say when the airspace will be clear enough to fly again.

The Land Use Change and Agriculture Program of IIASA (LUC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have developed a new comprehensive Harmonized World Soil Database (HWSD).

Nokia’s Ovi Maps Navigation Goes Free

Nokia announced that it is releasing a new version of Ovi Maps navigation software is free for download at www.nokia.com / maps. Ten Nokia phones update currently, but only in the USA: the Mini-N97, E72, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and the Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition. According to the company develops, every Nokia Symbian S60 device developed from now on will be eligible for the free navigation service.

Ovi Maps covers more than 180 countries with car and pedestrian navigation for 74 countries in 46 languages and 6000 3D landmarks for 200 cities around the world. Lonely Planet and Michelin guides have information on more than 1,000 destinations globally.

Google and GeoEye worked closely to get fresh imagery from Haiti. Satellite imagery layer post-earthquake is available to download as a KML file. You can also open the file in Google Maps.

The imagery shows a powerful glimpse into the destruction in Haiti. Here are before-and-after screenshots of the Presidential Palace and an area of Port-au-Prince:
