Historypin is a very cool project turning Google Street View into a digital time machine by letting people attach their historic photographs to specific locations.

It is a partnership with Google, uses Google Maps and Street View technology and hopes to become the largest user-generated archive of the world’s historical images and stories.

Historypin asks people to dig out, upload and pin their own old photos, as well as the stories behind them, onto the Historypin map. Uniquely, Historypin lets you layer old images onto modern Street View scenes, giving a series of peaks into the past.
Users can browse the photos by location and time period, or zoom into Street View to compare the world of today with how it looked decades ago. Each photo can be accompanied by the date it was taken as well as the story behind it, as written by users.
