Cartographic Quality: ArcMap to Adobe Illustrator for Publication

Author(s): Ralph Wagnitz

ArcMap map production has improved considerably in recent ArcGIS 9.x. However, in many cases maps must be refined further to high-quality maps for publication. Costs may be important for for post-production if maps should be sent to a graphic artist. In a recent project Ralph Wagnitz (Author of this paper) used Adobe Illustrator to produce presentation style graphics from ArcMap exports. The methodology was unique in that it requires no additional software or filters for export or import, while maintaining the geographical integrity in Illustrator. ArcMap was used for all data creation and manipulation of data, such as smoothing and generalization. This paper provides an overview of the processes used to display and discuss cartographic examples.
