ESRI’s Applications Prototype Lab published a new version of the free GeoTagger Add-In for ArcGIS Desktop 10. This Add-In allows the user to geotag any text directly from ArcMap. Simply drop and drop any text into the dialog and click the button to submit it MetaCarta’s public geotagging web service.

GeoTagger Add-In for ArcGIS Desktop 10 uses MetaCarta’s public geotagging web service to extract geographic references from text. The service supports English, Russian, Spanish and Arabic. This contribution includes full source code.
To install:
- Download this contribution to your computer,
- Unzip the file,
- Double click on the .esriAddIn file.
To uninstall:
- In ArcMap, select Customize > AddIn Manager,
- Select “ESRI.PrototypeLab.GeoTagger”,
- Click “Delete this AddIn”.
How to use:
- Start ArcMap,
- Add any basemap,
- Display the geotagger toolbar (Customize > View > Geotagger),
- Click the only button on the toolbar to display the geotagger window,
- Drag and drop (or copy/paste) text from an email, web page or any other document,
- Click the Options button (3rd from right) and enter your metacarta username and password. This step is only required once. Visit the following web site to request a free 30 day trial. http://accounts.metacarta.com
- Click the Search button (3th from right),
- Geotagged text will appear as hyperlinks. Hover over the links to view geotagging metadata or right click to interact (zoom/pan) with the tag.
